Elecare, A New Standard of Amino Acid-based Formula

Abbott is delighted to announce an addition to our trusted portfolio of food for special medical purposes for infants (iFSMPs), EleCare, by Similac. EleCare is the first amino acid-based formula in the UK containing synthesised 2’-fucosyllactose (2’-FL) human milk oligosaccharide (HMO). EleCare helps support the systemic immune system, as 2’-FL HMO has proven benefits on the gut and beyond† 1, 2

Breast milk is the gold standard providing not only nutrition, but protection and support for the developing immune system,3-5 which is critical, particularly in the first year of life.6 However, not every infant with allergies can be breastfed and a number of families depend on hypoallergenic formula.

HMOs are a diverse group of bioactive, non-digestible carbohydrates and the third most abundant solid component of breast milk.7, 8 Breast milk contains many distinct HMOs, which have a positive effect on gut microbiota and play an important role systemically in supporting the developing immune system.7-10

Following 18 years of extensive research into HMOs, Abbott know that 2’-FL HMO is the most abundant HMO in most mother’s milk, and we are delighted to be the first and only medical nutrition company in the UK to add 2’-FL HMO to an amino acid-based formula.
