RESOURCE OF THE MONTH: A practical guide for reintroducing cow’s milk using the milk ladder

We are pleased to introduce a new Milk Ladder resource, designed to support your patients with mild to moderate, non-IgE-mediated cow’s milk allergy.

The Milk Ladder is a structured, step-by-step approach to reintroducing cow’s milk into a child’s diet. It starts with cow’s milk in its least allergenic form, typically baked within foods. If these early stages are tolerated, infants can gradually progress to other dairy-containing foods, with the aim of accepting cow’s milk or standard formula where appropriate. Every child progresses at their own pace, and there is no set timeframe for completing the Milk Ladder. Regular reviews and continued support from a healthcare professional are essential to ensure the process is safe, suitable, and tailored to the individual child’s needs.

This practical guide has been created to help families understand and navigate the reintroduction process and should always be used with guidance from a doctor, health visitor, or dietitian.
